The M2 Browning Machine Gun, or "Ma Deuce", was completed in the fall of 1918 by John M. Browning as a counter to German anti-tank rifles and increased levels of armor arising during World War 1. Chambered with the .50 Caliber BMG cartridge, the M2 Browning proved to be a formidable piece of equipment with a fire rate of around 450 rounds per minute. The heavy gun was initially cooled via a water-cooled barrel, but ultimately transitioned to air-cooled variants such as the Heavy Barrel (M2HB) and Aircraft Basic Barrel. These proved to be much lighter for infantry transport or aerial applications. The M2 Browning proved effective in a number of applications such as anti-aircraft, armor-piercing, and aerial combat situations. Ultimately, it proved most effective in the United States Air Force as the gun was utilized in everything from Boeing B-17 Bombers to P-51 Mustangs. Overall, 2,000,000 total M2 Browning Machine Guns were produced during World War 2, with 350,000 being the M2HB variant, and the rest utilized for mostly aerial applications.
